On the TV side, some of primetime television's most popular programs go head-to-head for the win with Being Mary Jane, Empire, How to Get Away With Murder, Power and Scandal all competing in the category for Outstanding Drama Series.

In total, Empire scored 12 nods, the most of any TV series this year, followed by the Tracee-Ellis Ross and Anthony Anderson-led comedy Black-ish with 10. HTGAWM earned five in total while Being Mary Jane, Book of Negroes and Scandal tied with four each.
On the movie front, Universal's Straight Outta Compton earned five nominations, including the coveted Outstanding Motion Picture. However, Creed led the pack with six nods, including Outstanding Motion Picture and Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture for Michael B. Jordan's lead performance.
