Synthetic Marijuana Hospitalized Patriots Chandler Jones

The confused defensive end sought help at a local police station.

When trying to take an edge off goes wrong.

That could be one way to describe Chandler Jones being hospitalized Sunday due to a bad reaction to synthetic marijuana.

The Boston Globe is reporting that the confused New England Patriots' Pro Bowl defensive end walked into the local Foxborough, Mass., police station to seek help after having the bad reaction. Not the kind of news the Patriots want to hear just days away from hosting the Kansas City Chiefs in an AFC divisional playoff game Saturday.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse told the Globe that synthetic marijuana can cause extreme anxiety, altered perception, confusion and paranoia.

Despite Jones's reaction, a source told the Globe that he was at the Patriots' facility Monday morning at 6:30 a.m., lifting weights, and hasn’t missed any team meetings or practices since.

The NFL is reviewing Jones's incident and the defensive end could wind up being entered into Stage I of the NFL drug-testing program if he is ticketed for using the drug.

Jones was made unavailable to speak with reporters Wednesday, but his teammate Matthew Slater told the Globe: “I certainly don’t know enough to comment at all on that situation but I will say this: As a member of this team we support all 50, 60 guys on this team. We have their backs, regardless of the situation, and that’s no different with Chandler. He has our support. I don’t know enough about the situation — nor do I have the right — to comment on that.’’

Jones is scheduled to play against the Chiefs on Saturday.
