This Artist Re-creates Iconic Black Movie And TV Covers With Your Fave '90s Cartoons
Using her love for the '90s and the influence of music, movies and historic pioneers, freelance artist/illustrator/graphic designer Ashleigh Sharmaine is mashing up some of our favorite movie covers and iconic album covers and giving her unique take of what TV/movie posters can be –and yes, we are loving every stroke!
Known for what she calls her “three main ingredients” of her art: “nostalgia, concept mash-ups and crossovers,” this young artist is taking Instagram by storm with her unique depictions of some of your favorite covers.
“For my character crossover illustrations, I try to switch the actors/actresses with a cartoon that best suits their personality, characteristics or appearance,” Ashleigh shares exclusively with BET.
When creating her dynamically stylish mockups, she admits it can take anywhere from 30 to 44 minutes for a simple project, and more intricate designs can take a few hours or days to complete.
It isn’t like all her hard work goes without notice. Not only has she garnered more than 22K followers on her Instagram, but she has also gained some attention from a long list of celebrities who retweet and repost her work, including Taraji P. Henson and Martin Lawrence.
Carefully keeping track of her biggest celebrity supporters, Ashleigh happily broke down her fans.
“Migos and Omarion retweeted my design, Will Packer reposted my Girls Trip design, Meagan Good and Bill Bellamy commented on a Cousin Skeeter design, Taraji P. Henson and Octavia Spencer reposted my Hidden Figures, Chris Brown liked two of my edits of him, Martin Lawrence reposted three of my pieces, Issa Rae liked my Insecure cover, Carl Payne reposted my Paid in Full/Martin, Tichina Arnold, Maxwell and Pooch Hall liked a picture, Kendall Marshall liked and commented on my design, Tyga revined a painting I did of him, Trina reposted a portrait, Diamond and Twista reposted my Hey Arnold, Keke Wyatt reposted a portrait, Chrisette Michele commented on my artwork, Paula Jai Parker commented on my artwork, Tahj Mowry reposted, and Kadeem Hardison liked and commented on a few Different World pieces.”
She’s even been contacted by Kendall Marshall for a Doug x White Men Can't Jump painting. What a huge response for an artist who started creating art at a very young age.
“I’ve always been into arts and crafts ever since I can remember. Cartoons are what I first started drawing as a child, so I just stuck to them and it’s been working ever since,” shared the artist who has gotten far more positive responses than negative.
So what’s the overall goal for the artist? “Push my art into different avenues, creating a bigger platform for my brand.”
With dope work like this, we know it’s only a stroke away.
