Missy Elliott Will Receive The 2019 VMAs Vanguard Award

Congratulations are in order for one of hip-hop’s baddest and most supa dupa fly to ever run the game! Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott has more than earned her legendary status in her 20+ years in the music industry. Now, the groundbreaking femcee and producer is finally getting the recognition she deserves.

  • Earlier this year, Missy made history as the first female hip-hop artist to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Now, the 48-year-old producer-rapper-songwriter will take home the coveted Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. 

    And it’s about time! 

    The hip-hop visionary revolutionized cemented her status in rap’s history with the most audacious looks, flyest choreography, and wildest visuals to have ever graced our screens, starting with her 1997 music video debut for “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)” where she made a Hefty-size inflated trash bag look effortlessly chic. Missy did the culture a solid with her hypnotic and funky-fresh eccentric visuals that blew expectations out of the water.

     

  • “Missy’s impact on the music landscape is indelible,” Bruce Gillmer, MTV International's VP of Talent and Music Programming/Events told Variety. “Her creative vision across production, performance and songwriting is unmatched.”

    The award show will take place at the Prudential Center on August 26 where Missy is slated to perform for the first time since 2003. This also marks the first time a female rapper has ever received the award. 

    “I am Humbly Grateful to be receiving the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award,” Missy penned on Twitter following MTV’s announcement. “I Thank my FANS “Supafriends” who fought diligently to see this day come @KidFury @crissles who rooted for years 4 me. I am crying happy tears. Thank you God @MTV @vmas. [I] am SO HUMBLED."
