Even though Gucci Mane has made a new and improved re-entry into the rap game, it doesn’t mean he’s forgotten the fragments of his checkered past.

And at the onset of his rap career, a landmark moment worth $50,000 is probably his most memorable.

Sitting down with Hot 97, Atlanta’s trap pioneer revealed some shocking details about what drew such widespread attention to his first-ever studio-recorded song.

According to Gucci, longtime collaborator and close friend Zaytoven had made a song titled “Lawnmower Man,” which appeared on his first studio album Trap House. Though he said the incident occurred in 2000, the song’s line where he admits to robbing someone of $50,000 boosted the track’s notoriety.

“It’s old, but I had robbed somebody for like 50 grand,” the “Lemonade” rapper confessed. “And I rapped about it on that song, like, ‘I hit a lick for like 50 stacks and people keep on calling me saying Gucci bring the money back.'”

He said that once he took the CD back to his hood and played it, everyone went brilliantly haywire over the bizarre line. He added that, prior to the record, no one knew that he rapped. So when he asked Zaytoven for a copy of the track, word had quickly spread and, before he knew it, everyone wanted to hear the song.

“The hype from that just made me like, ‘I’m finna take this serious.' Everybody saying I’m the truth.”
