Family Of Slain New Jersey Lawmaker Hires Lawyer To Get Answers
Family and friends of slain Sayreville, N.J., Councilwoman Eunice Dwunfour held a funeral service Saturday (March 4) in Newark on what would have been her 31 birthday.
Her family hired attorney John Wisniewski, a former New Jersey state assemblyman, to help them get answers about the investigation into her death, News 12 New Jersey reports.
Dwunfour was found shot multiple times in her SUV outside her townhouse at about 7:20 p.m. on Feb. 1 and pronounced dead at the scene.
"There are no answers yet as to how this happened? Who's responsible? What was the motive?" Wisniewski said.
Several agencies are involved in the investigation, including the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, the Sayreville Police Department, the New Jersey State Police and the FBI, NJ.com reports. More than a month into the investigation, officials have not even released a description of a suspect.
Wisniewski said authorities will meet with Dwumfour’s family this week to discuss the case.
“This will be the first time that there’s been an opportunity for them to sit down to ask questions, get an understanding of where (investigators) are at,” Wisniewski told NJ.com.
He continued, “I’ve told the family and they understand that they’re not going to get investigative details, they’re not going to get their methods. What they’d like to know is that no stone is being left unturned, that no issues or set of facts are being taken off the table until the case is solved, and that the person or persons who are responsible for this are brought to justice.’’
Eunice was the first born of five children, her Ghanaian immigrant parents, Prince and Mary Dwumfour, said in a joint family statement at the funeral service. “You have touched our lives in so many ways from the day you were born to death,” they added.
Dwumfour also leaves behind husband Eze Kings, a Nigerian pastor, and 12-year-old daughter Nicole Fatima Teliano.
“Your sweet voice still lingers in my mind and heart,” Teliano said at the funeral. “Mom, I’m eternally grateful for your love and dedication and perseverance. Despite the difficult times that you faced I know you’re looking down at me as a beautiful sweet angel with a great smile.”
Dwumfour, a Republican, was just beginning her political career. In 2021, Dwumfour and fellow Republican Christian Onuoha, beat two incumbent Democrats to start their three-year terms on the six-person borough council in 2022.
