Star Wars Just Broke an Epic Box-Office Record

It only took 20 days to completely dominate.

It's official. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is officially the king of the box office, surpassing Avatar as the highest-grossing film in North America. The John Boyega-led film, which earned more than $760 million, broke Avatar's record North American box office of $760.5 million on Wednesday to snag the historic No. 1 spot.

While the new figure has not been released by Disney media just yet, we do know that The Force Awakens peaked at $758.2 million on Tuesday.

It only took the J.J. Abrams-directed film 20 days to pass the coveted mark, which was created by Avatar in 2009. The Zoe Saldana-led film set the record after 24 weeks in theaters, earning an initial $750 million, and a re-release in 2010, earning $10.5 million.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, domestically, The Force Awakens cleaned up, setting even more records. Some of them include biggest second weekend of all time ($149.2 million), biggest third weekend ($90.2 million), biggest Thursday preview gross ($57 million), biggest Christmas Day ($49.3 million), biggest New Year's Day ($34.4 million), highest location average for a wide debut ($59,982), and biggest opening week ($390.9 million).

While the film's already set so many records, it still has some ways to go before it eclipses the $2.78 billion earned worldwide by Avatar, but we have a feeling the film is just getting started.
