Michael B. Jordan, Forest Whitaker Talk Filming in BART Station
Fruitvale Station was one of last year's most powerful films and helped facilitate a national dialogue about the treatment of Black men and boys in America. Like Trayvon Martin, who became a national symbol after he lost his life in a senseless act of gun violence, the film's subject Oscar Grant III was similarly killed without apparent cause.
Michael B. Jordan, who played Grant in the film, reflects on shooting the scene during which Oscar dies at the hands of police violence. The scene was filmed in the same Bay Area commuter train station where Grant was shot in 2009, and where the film got its name. "I was lying in the exact spot where Oscar died," says Jordan. "There's still a bullet there. Nobody took it out."
The day of filming the climactic scene began with a moment of silence, explains director Ryan Coogler. "The cast, the crew, BART officers, everybody was there, standing side by side," he says.
"BART offered their resources, offered the use of Fruitvale Station, offered themselves," says producer Forest Whitaker. "It allows, hopefully, for some form of healing to occur."
