Alicia Keys: I Experienced Prejudice Outside of New York City

The singer/composer of Mister & Peete on her indie film.

Alicia Keys may seem to have the picture-perfect life with husband Swizz Beatz and their baby Egypt, but the singer/composer/actress has had to overcome obstacles to get where she is. The R&B icon, the composer on the upcoming indie film The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Peete, which is in theaters Friday, talks to us about things that nearly defeated her but ultimately made her stronger. "If you can push through difficult times, it makes you stronger," she says.
Plus, Keys opens up about experiencing racism first hand. "Often for me, it happens outside of New York," she admits, adding, "it's when I come across people who have never met someone like me before."
Watch our exclusive interview with Alicia Keys for more of her insight into the film, and hear what song the "Empire State of Mind" singer considers her personal New York anthem.
