Listen to the Heartfelt Song Eric Garner's Family Released Titled "I Can't Breathe"
In memory of Eric Garner, who was killed in 2014 when a NYPD officer put him in a chokehold, his family has released a new song, aptly titled, "I Can't Breathe."
The title draws from Garner's final words, which were recorded as he repeatedly said them a shocking eleven times prior to his death, and is an impassionated track promising, "we ain't gonna stop until love is free."
The emotional song features vocals from Garner's sister, Ellisha Flagg, with her brother Steven Flagg rapping.
Some notable lyrics include, "I can hear my brother crying, 'I can't breathe.' Now I'm in this struggle and I can't leave."
"We all know the solution, but they blame you and me," Elisha sings. "We ain't gonna stop until love is free."
"If I lose my car, I can get another one / Lose my house, I can get another one / Lose my mind, I create another one / They took my brother and I can never get another one," Steven raps during his part on the song. "I’m tired of a system that will never love me / A system that took my brother from me / No matter how much money I receive, I can hear my brother crying ‘I can’t breathe.'"
When releasing the song, Garner's family told Billboard, "The song is dedicated to the struggle everyone is going through."
