Tyre Nichols: Lawyer Alleges Stolen Items, Hallucinogenic Drug Found In Nichol’s Car

The unconfirmed claim was made in court documents by a lawyer for one of the five former Memphis officers charged with the deadly beating of Nichols.

The case of the late 29-year-old Tyre Nichols continues to unfold as a defense lawyer comes forth with new unconfirmed claims.

According to The Washington Post, a lawyer for one of the five former Memphis officers charged for the deadly beating of Nichols during a Jan. 7 traffic stop claims in court documents that investigators discovered stolen credit cards and a hallucinogenic drug in Nichols’ vehicle.

Psilocybin, a substance found in mushrooms, was discovered in Nichols’ vehicle by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation during their inventory process, according to a lawyer for former officer Justin Smith.

Authorities have not released any details about whether the claims are true.

No immediate comment was made by a lawyer representing Nichols’ family, but federal prosecutors did not hold back their thoughts on the matter.

“The fact that the defendant now seeks to rifle through the deceased victim’s personal effects for new information suggests that he intends to attack the character of the victim at trial and, in so doing, ask the jury to improperly nullify the criminal charges,” federal prosecutors said in their own court document.

On Jan. 7, Nichols was pulled over for alleged reckless driving by a team of Memphis officers. Nichols fled after being hit with pepper spray and a stun gun, leading police on a chase. The officers eventually apprehended Nichols and fatally beat him.

Nichols was unarmed and died three days later in the hospital due to what the autopsy revealed as blunt force trauma, kidney damage and liver failure.

Attorney Ben Crump and Antonio Romanucci released a statement  in May following the autopsy report, saying, “We know now what we knew then.”

Former Memphis officers involved in the fatal assault, Taddarus Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr., and Justin Smith, were charged with second-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, official misconduct and official oppression. All five officers pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder on February 17.

All of the officers pleaded not guilty to federal civil rights charges. They were released on a $50,000 unsecured bond.
