Jennifer Hudson Says Her EGOT Win “Came As A Surprise” And She “Didn’t See It Coming”
Jennifer Hudson is “still processing” her EGOT status and tells Gayle King it “came as a surprise” to her in their recent interview.
"I did not fully see it coming,” she explained.
“I went there to celebrate the cast for getting 11 nominations, and I don't feel like I've been present. And then when they said, 'Strange Loop, best musical,' I was cheering for them. And once we get on the stage, everybody started chanting, 'EGOT, EGOT,' and I was like, 'Wait, what?'"
The Respect star has another name she calls herself in addition to EGOT-winner, and that’s “17th EGOT.”
“I call myself 17,” she tells King.
“I’m the 17th EGOT winner. Now I have a charm that says 17. When you see 17, that represents the 17th EGOT.”
In an interview with BET.com, she mentions while she’s grateful for her accolades, her winnings come from the “love and passion from her purpose.”
“I have a saying that the awards I win that I mount on my wall don’t amount to the person I am,” she said.
“Being a human first is most important to me. Regarding my accolades, while I’m grateful for each one I’ve received, they came from the love and passion of my purpose. When you allow your desire to lead you, great things happen. I do it for the love.”
The Dreamgirls alum is readying up for her talk show debut The Jennifer Hudson Show and told us the platform will be a space for viewers to know who she is.
My favorite thing about the preparation is that I can ultimately be myself,” she said.
“For many years, I played other people like Aretha [Franklin], Effie, and many other characters — now, I get to be me. It’s my turn to be Jennifer, with the audience understanding who I am as I continue to do so.”
The Jennifer Hudson Show debuts on Monday, September 12th, on Fox Television Station and Heart Television Broadcast carriers. Check local listings for times.
