The hit song "That's What Friends Are For" was written by Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager in 1982 and performed in the movie Night Shift. But it was the cover version performed by Dionne Warwick and Friends that, on Dec. 27, 1986, was ranked by Billboard to be the most popular single of the year.

Warwick's friends included Elton John, Gladys Knight and Stevie Wonder, who performed the song with her in 1985 to raise awareness and more than $3 million for AIDS research. In January 1986, it was the number one song on the soul charts and spent four weeks on the Billboard Hot 100.

"That's What Friends Are For" was one of the biggest hits of Warwick's career. In 2012, she celebrated her 50th year in the music industry and released an album titled Now. Despite many successes, however, she declared bankruptcy in 2013 and owes more than $10 million in unpaid taxes.
