Suge Knight Gets More Time to Prepare for Robbery, Murder Cases
Suge Knight caught a small victory in court today after a judge approved a request to delay hearings in his robbery and murder case, reports the Associated Press. Prosecutors were expected to lay out evidence in Knight’s alleged altercation with a female photographer, but the judge pushed the hearing back to Oct. 13.
Knight and Katt Williams stand accused of attacking the photographer last September. Months later, Knight was arrested for murder and attempted murder in a separate ongoing case. His murder trial was scheduled to begin over the summer though a new date has yet to be announced.
The 50-year-old Death Row Records co-founder was in the courtroom this morning, but did not speak. A day earlier, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Howard Haim refused to delay the civil suit against Knight in the paparazzi incident.
Judge Haim determined that there was no reason to make the reported victim, Leslie Redden, wait until the end of Knight’s other criminal cases to continue with her lawsuit.
Defense attorney Loyst Fletcher wanted to keep Knight from saying something in a civil deposition that could be used against him in the criminal case. Redden’s lawyer agreed not to jeopardize Knight’s Fifth Amendment rights, and will not depose him before the criminal court matter is over.
Knight has been locked up since late January, and his legal discrepancies haven’t slowed down. The family of the man Knight fatally ran over near a Straight Outta Compton shooting location filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the disgraced former label boss, along with the film’s producers, Dr. Dre, and Ice Cube.
