OG Maco’s Family Issues Statement on Rapper’s Attempted Suicide

In a statement, the family of the College Park rapper said he’s “receiving the best possible care.”

Georgia rapper OG Maco was hospitalized after reportedly attempting suicide last week, which his family has addressed in a new statement.

On Monday, December 16, Maco’s family stated that the rapper is “currently in critical but stable condition” after being discovered suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head last Thursday, December 12.

“He is receiving the best possible care, and we are staying hopeful as he continues to fight,” the statement continues. “At this time, we kindly ask that you respect our privacy, but if you would like to send any messages or have anything you wish to get to the family, please reach out via DM.”

With rumors swirling that the 32-year-old has passed away, his family urged fans not to subscribe to unverified reports. “Please note, all official updates regarding OG Maco’s health will come directly from his official social media accounts. This will be the only source for valid information,” the statement concluded.

The rapper’s manager, Poppa Perc, confirmed to AllHipHop last week that Maco, born Benedict Chiajulam Ihesiba Jr., was in recovery. “He’s still on life support, still fighting,” Perc told the outlet. “They are doing multiple tests on his brain and trying to let the swelling go down a bit, let his head heal a little bit, so they can do a procedure. Only immediate family is allowed at the hospital, but we’ve been getting updates.”

The rapper, who made his mainstream debut with the 2014 single “U Guessed It,” was signed to rap label Quality Control but departed a short time after before the release of his 2021 debut album, The God of Rage. In 2019, Maco revealed that he was battling a flesh-eating skin disease on his face called necrotizing fasciitis after he sustained a minor rash that was improperly treated.
