James Harden's New Deal With The Rockets Outdoes Even Steph Curry's $201 Million Payday
If you thought Stephen Curry’s new contract with the Warriors was huge, get ready for your head to spin again when you see the kind of money James Harden just locked down.
According to ESPN, the Houston Rockets shooting guard just inked a four-year extension worth $228 million through the 2022-23 season. Harden, who was the runner-up to Russell Westbrook for this season’s NBA MVP, currently has two years and $59 million left on his current deal.
The four-year extension, which carries a value of $170 million, is the richest in NBA history. The extension comes after the team acquired Chris Paul from the L.A. Clippers and allows Houston to set its sights on All-Star forward Carmelo Anthony, who reportedly is currently in trade talks.
"Houston is home for me," Harden said in a statement released by the Rockets. "[Owner Leslie Alexander] has shown he is fully committed to winning, and my teammates and I are going to keep putting in the work to get better and compete for the title."
James Harden is taking advantage of the brand-new CBA rules that enables contract extensions for superstars. He became eligible for the megadeal after making the All-NBA team in May.
