Kanye West Is Busy in Paris Working on a Fashion Line
It’s no secret that Kanye West feels right at home in the fashion world. He's become a fixture in style publications for his fashion risks, he regularly appears front row at fashion shows and even dates the occasional model. Do we even need to mention all the rapping he does about his favorite designers? Now the self proclaimed “Louis Vuitton” is making his love for style even more official with the creation of his own designs.
The Telegraph’s UK spies tell them that ‘Ye has struck up a friendship with Professor Louise Wilson, head of the MA fashion design degree at Central Saint Martins College of Art in London (a school he was rumored to be planning to attend) and is making plans to show a new range that is slated for September for the 2012 spring/summer season.
It’s hard to imagine what direction he’ll go in. Will it be envelope-pushing styles like the Céline women’s blouse he wore in Coachella, dapper custom suits that he’s worn in Paris, all-red skinny jean outfits a la his stage costumes—with gold chains to accessorize? It remains to be seen what he’s got up his sleeve, but for now he’s said to be working on “a high-end collection comprising looks for both men and women, from a studio in the center of the French capital.”
Back in 2009, Kanye said he was reluctant to do a line after seeing the fate of other celebrity design efforts. He told Elle, “Did you not see the Lindsay [Lohan] and Ungaro collection? That was 9/11 for celebrities doing fashion. After that I thought, 'Well I can't do a line now.’”
This year he already put a designer-clad foot into the fashion waters and collaborated on a line of scarves with M/M Paris inspired by the artwork for his album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Kanye is expected to join his people in the fashion "in" crowd tonight at the CFDA Awards (the fashion industries Oscars) to present Céline designer Phoebe Philo with an award.
