LWD 2016: A Must-See Conversation on Black Girl Magic

Leading women share what it means to ignite our power.

Black Girl Magic is a buzzy term that has woven its way into pop culture. (And, needless to say, we love it!) It’s one that can be quite contentious, as it means a little something different to each of us. On March 2, the country’s top businesswomen and tastemakers gathered for an intimate discussion about what Black Girl Magic means to them during BET Networks' seventh annual Leading Women Defined Summit in Miami. Their answers may surprise you.

Media personality Bevy Smith moderated a panel featuring BLACK GIRLS ROCK! CEO & Founder Beverly Bond; Debra Martin Chase, CEO/President, Martin Chase Productions; Debra L. Lee, Chairman & CEO, BET Networks; and Angela Rye, Principal & CEO, Impact Strategies. The esteemed panelists delved deep into the origins of the term and why we celebrate it today.

Is Black Girl Magic a verb, a noun or an adjective? “It’s all of those things, it depends on the moment. It depends on what you’re doing with it, how you’re using it, how you’re defining it,” Carol’s Daughter Founder Lisa Price told CentricTV.com’s Kela Walker during the event.

Image activist Michaela Angela Davis echoed Price’s sentiment about individuality, saying, “Black Girl Magic is that thing that you can’t see. You feel it. It’s a mojo. It’s ancestral, it’s futuristic, it’s out energy.”
Panelist Debra Martin Chase confronted apprehension to the term with aplomb. “To me, it’s inspiring, and it’s to be defined. And if you feel threatened by three words, then you probably do have a problem and need to look at how you feel about yourself.” Two snaps!
