Tennessee running back Chris Johnson and the Titans general manager Mike Reinfeldt met Wednesday as planned, but there was no deal struck to end the holdout.

Reinfeldt characterized the meeting as “beneficial” in an espn.com story. The two sides are expected to meet again soon in hopes of getting one of the NFL’s elite running backs in camp before the preseason ends.

“It was important for us to have a face-to-face meeting so that everyone could have a voice and understand the perspective of the other side,” Reinfeldt said in a statement released by the team. “I'm not sure there was any progress made, but I do think it was beneficial to meet. We were able to discuss several different elements of a potential contract, but there was no agreement on those topics.”

Johnson has been the most productive running back in the NFL the last three seasons and he wants to be compensated for his efforts. The Titans have said they are willing to make Johnson the richest running back in NFL history. Johnson, however, wants to be paid as one of the elite playmakers in the league.

Neither Johnson nor his agent Joe Segal spoke to the media on Wednesday but Johnson did make a comment to the Nashville Tennessean upon arriving in town Tuesday night.

“I want to be here. We'll see,” Johnson told the newspaper.

Johnson seeks a deal that would pay him $39 million during the first three years of the contract at a $13 million per season average. Johnson has been grossly underpaid for the past few years considering his performance. The Titans did rework his deal last summer to $1.065 million in 2011 and he hopes to secure a better deal prior to the season.
