Maury Just Posted This Adorable Throwback Clip Of This Award-Winning Singer Before She Became Famous
In commemoration of H.E.R. landing five Grammy nominations ahead of the Recording Academy’s 62nd annual award ceremony, famed television host Maury Povich went deep into his vault to unearth a throwback for the ages. On Sunday (Nov. 24), The Maury Show’s official YouTube account uploaded an archived clip of H.E.R. from before she became the acclaimed singer-songwriter she is today.
In the video, a then-10-year-old H.E.R. confidently introduces herself as Gabi on the show’s “Most Talented Kids” segment, as she says that she can play the bass, guitar and drums, “but [her] favorite is the piano.”
“When I grow up, I want to be a musician, a singer [and] a songwriter. People ask me all the time how I got interested in piano, and I say that piano picked me. I didn’t pick the piano,” she explains in a pre-filmed montage. The narration ends, and a pint-size H.E.R, sans her signature shades, comes on stage to speak with Maury one-on-one about her musical aspirations.
Maury asks how long she’s been playing the piano, to which H.E.R. explains she first learned how to play at the age of four after her dad bought her a keyboard. “I’ve been singing since I was about 6 years old,” she adds before showing the host her book of poetry.
