Nelly Is Going All the Way Country on His Next Project
Nelly is no stranger to crossing over to country. Now, it seems like the St. Louis rapper is getting ready to go all in with his upcoming Heartland EP.
Co-president of Atom Factory, J. Erving, sat down with Billboard to talk about signing singer/songwriter Charlie Puth, his active roster that includes John Legend and Meghan Trainor and managing Nelly. He revealed that the 40-year-old veteran is working on a full-fledged country EP.
“He's a free agent on the label side now, and is working on a country-based Heartland EP, which should be really interesting,” says J. Erving. “He may be one of the first hip-hop artists to jump into that space in an authentic way with Florida Georgia Line and Tim McGraw, so we think he has an opportunity to grow that base even more.”
One of Nelly’s biggest songs was “Over and Over,” a duet with McGraw. He would later work with the Grammy-nominated duo Florida Georgia Line on the remix to “Cruise” that set an all-time country sales record digitally in 2014.
Although Nelly is currently fighting a drug arrest in Tennessee, this release may put him back in public’s good graces.
