On Sunday morning, 19-year-old Anthony Nazaire was stabbed and killed during a large fight that took place on the campus of Cornell University.

Nazaire, originally from Brooklyn, was a sophomore at Ithaca College and had just returned to campus after spending the summer with his family. 

Officials say that Nazaire attended an orientation party hosted by the Cornell chapter of Omega Psi Phi. Hundreds of students attended the party and witnesses claim several fights broke out over the course of the night. 22-year-old Trevor Hanks was present when tensions escalated and the stabbing occurred. He recalls looking down and seeing a person “covered in blood.”

Another unidentified Ithaca student was also stabbed but is expected to make a full recovery from his injuries. Officers arrived and saw Nazaire and the other victim in front of Olin Hall. Nazaire was taken to Cayuga Medical Center but could not be saved, said police.

The other victim was airlifted to Upstate Medical Center and treated for his injuries. He was later released that day.

Friends and family members of Nazaire were shocked and devastated by the news of his untimely death.

“In the meantime, I hope you will hold these students — along with their families, friends, classmates, and professors — in your thoughts and prayers at this difficult and tragic time,” said Ithaca College president Tom Rochon.

Cornell school officials have also spoken out about the violent outbreak. Ryan Lombardi, Cornell’s vice president for student and campus life, issued a statement expressing condolences to the family and friends of the victims.

“There is nothing more important than the safety of our community; as such, this incident is deeply disturbing,” Lombardi said. “Please be sure to take care of yourselves and each other throughout the coming days.”

Police have not confirmed if they have a suspect at this time and are continuing to investigate the crime.
