Hip hop lost some of its soul last week when Phife Dawg passed away. While most are still mourning his loss, there are some who are already planning a way to commemorate his life and work.

Jarobi, a co-member of A Tribe Called Quest, was doing some soul searching over the weekend while remembering one of his closest friends. In a Facebook status posted Saturday (March 26) he called for – among other things – a boulevard in Queens, New York to be named “Phife Dawg.” It may’ve been wishful thinking for a project down the road but a few of those who revered Phife Diggy are actually attempting to make it happen.

Tee Smif, an organizer for The Hip Hop Discussion Group, helped craft a petition addressing Queens Council Member I. Daneek Miller to actually co-name Linden Boulevard between 192nd Street and 193rd Street, “A Tribe Called Quest Boulevard.” While it doesn’t follow Jarobi’s wishes in full, it does put in forth action to honor him and his group.

“Please help us by signing this petition and bringing awareness to this cause,” the petition reads. “We’re very close at making this a reality but need your help!” According to Smif, roughly 2,200 people have signed the petition, which has gained support from Talib Kweli, among others. Linden Boulevard was referenced in the track “Steve Biko (Stir It Up)” from Tribe’s 1993 album Midnight Marauders.

Malik “Phife Dawg” Taylor passed away Tuesday (March 22) from complications due to diabetes, a disease he’d been struggling with for most of his adult life. He was 45 years old.
