Sheryl Lee Ralph Shares Why She and Her Husband Never Moved In Together
Sheryl Lee Ralph and her husband, Pennsylvania Senator Vincent Hughes, have found the key to lasting love.
The Emmy-winning actress recently opened up about the secret to their nearly 20-year marriage, and it’s all about embracing a nontraditional living arrangement.
In a candid conversation with PEOPLE, Ralph shared that the couple has never lived under the same roof—and that’s precisely why their relationship works so well. “I'm very fortunate. The man that I am married to is Senator Vincent Hughes, seventh Senatorial District of Pennsylvania,” she proudly stated.
However, when it came to deciding where to live, the actress said it was clear that neither one would be uprooting their lives.
“You fall in love with somebody, and you realize he's not leaving his career. He's not leaving Philadelphia. I'm not leaving Hollywood,” Ralph shared. And, she explains, “When you have children, it’s very difficult.”
Both thriving in their respective careers, they decided early on to maintain their independence.
“Every two weeks, we saw each other, and it has continued to work out well. When I go to see him, I love to see him. When it’s time to leave, ‘Bye-bye. See you soon.’ I’m telling you, life is good,” she explained.
For Ralph, a key ingredient to their success is understanding that they each have their own space to shine. “He has his own life. I have my own life. He has his own real career. I have my own real career. He has his light to stand in. I have my light to stand in,” she said.
The couple is gearing up to celebrate 20 years of marriage this July. Ralph reflected on their journey, noting, “Some people can't even get through two,” before adding, “So it’s all good. It is all good.”
