Andrew Young becomes first African-American to be named U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.
President Jimmy Carter named Andrew Young Ambassador and Chief U.S. Delegate to the United Nations. He became the first African-American to hold the position. Young rose to national prominence as a leader in the civil rights struggle in the 1960s.
