Birdman won the Academy Award for Best Picture, beating out Selma, Boyhood, The Imitation Game and four other nominees for cinema's highest honor. Helmer Alejandro Iñárritu also won the prize for Best Director. 

Common and John Legend took home the award for Best Original Song for their track "Glory" from Selma. The pair collected their award just moments after bringing the audience to their feet with a performance of the song.
Though the telecast was packed with Black presenters — from Octavia Spencer to Idris Elba — the judges' nominations caused a stir for their lack of diversity, particularly in the acting categories. Out of 20 nominees, not one was a person of color. The absence of nominations for David Oyelowo and Ava DuVernay, who would have made history as the first Black woman up for a Best Director award, in particular sparked a social media backlash, with many film fans vowing to boycott the telecast altogether. The hashtag #OscarsSoWhite was trending on Twitter throughout the ceremony.
