Nia Wilson's Murder Has Anne Hathaway And Others Calling Out White Privilege And White Silence
Nia Wilson’s story is getting national attention. The 18-year-old woman and inspiring rapper was stabbed to death on a Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) station platform in Oakland on Sunday (July 22).
Her murderer is alleged to be 27-year-old John Cowell, a white male who many believe committed the horrific crime because Wilson was black. The whole thing is sparking outrage and reaction from social media, and now, celebrities who are finding out about it.
Anne Hathaway is one of those who is speaking out against violence against black people. She believes it’s white people’s duty to be more vigilant toward white privilege and claims race-inspired violence rarely ever targets caucasians.
“The murder of Nia Wilson- may she rest in the power and peace she was denied here- is unspeakable AND MUST NOT be met with silence. She is not a hash tag; she was a black woman and she was murdered in cold blood by a white man,” she captioned in an Instagram post under a pic of Nia Wilson.
“White people- including me, including you- must take into the marrow of our privileged bones the truth that ALL black people fear for their lives DAILY in America and have done so for GENERATIONS,” she continued. “White people DO NOT have equivalence for this fear of violence. Given those givens, we must ask our (white)selves- how “decent” are we really? Not in our intent, but in our actions? In our lack of action?”
Social media, of course, took note of the actress' comments and applauded that she used her platform to speak out
