Audiences just can't get enough of Middle Earth. Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies opened to a whopping $90.6 million five-day debut, easily winning the weekend box office. The film's weekend total was over $56 million, putting it well beyond the second and third place films.
Coming in at number two was Ben Stiller‘s Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, which opened below expectations with $17.3 million. Annie, starring Quvenzhané Wallis, Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz, took third place with $16.3 million. Wallis has been nominated for a Golden Globe award for her role in the musical, which is produced by Will Smith and Jay Z.
Rounding out the top five were the controversial Exodus: Gods and Kings and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1, bringing in $8.1 million and $7.8 million, respectively.
The box office is about to get flooded with a number of Christmas Day releases, including Clint Eastwood's American Sniper, Into the Woods and, of course, Selma. Will any be able to knock The Hobbit down a spot or two?
