The-Dream Airs Out "Dirty Laundry"

Dream explains penning Kelly Rowland's emotional track.

With monstrous hits like Justin Bieber's "Baby," Beyoncé's "Single Ladies" and Rihanna's "Unbrella," The-Dream has proven himself to be masterful with the pen. In taking on his latest buzzed about credit, "Dirty Laundry" — Kelly Rowland's brutally honest recount of domestic abuse, jealously and career troubles — the Radio Killah relied on his intuition to tell the story.

In a media round that included 106 & Park this week, Dream called into The Russ Parr Morning Show and explained making the emotional track. "It was more so just kinda my own insight to what was going on with her," he said. "Certain things I kinda knew about, and so I just kinda threw it out there."

Being that the two are so close, he knew the song could be risky but also "career defining" for Rowland. "I made 'Dirty Laundry' regardless of how uncomfortable she would be. I had no idea exactly how many things I was touching at the time."

Regarding any misconstrued shots at Bey, he reiterated their strong sisterly love which sometimes means being envious. "People go through things. The point of it is that they love each other. They've been friends, regardless of where they were in their lives. If you're at a low because of yourself, not because of anything anybody else did, if you're just going through something, it's hard for you to feel good about anybody else. So, she's just speaking from a normal person's point of view."

As for his own project IV Play, which dropped Tuesday (May 28), the father of four noted a big difference from his previous albums. "It's so nice and ratchet and free. Like I'm running in a field of ratchetness. I feel good."

IV Play features Rowland, with whom he's on tour, Beyoncé, Jay-Z, 2 Chainz and more.
