Jean Delance De-commits From Oklahoma After Racist Frat Video
The Oklahoma Sooners football team just lost out on a prized national recruit and it might be due to the blatantly-racist SAE fraternity video that surfaced Sunday night on the Internet.
On Tuesday, offensive lineman Jean Delance de-committed from the school, tweeting: "Firstly want to say thank you for giving me an opportunity to get my education and play football at OU, but I have officially de-committed from Oklahoma University. Nothing to do with the staff or team, I'll be reopening my recruitment due to personal reasons."
Although Delance didn't name the video as a reason for withdrawing his commitment to the school, critics say that's absolutely why the national recruit pulled out from attending Oklahoma.
This comes after a racist video of Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) hit the Internet on Sunday night. The disturbing video shows the frat chanting: “There will never be a n****r SAE / There will never be a n****r SAE / You can hang 'em from a tree, but they’ll never [inaudible] with me / There will never be a n****r SAE."
Oklahoma's president, David Boren, also banned the frat from campus, making sure they moved out by midnight Monday.
"To those who have misused their free speech in a reprehensible way, I have a message for you...you are disgraceful," Boren wrote in a statement Sunday night obtained by Yahoo Sports. "You have violated all that we stand for. You should not have the privilege of calling yourselves 'Sooners.' Real Sooners are not racist. Real Sooners are not bigots. Real Sooners believe in equal opportunity. Real Sooners treat all people with respect. Real Sooners love each other and take care of each other like family members.
"Effective immediately, all ties and affiliations between this University and the local SAE chapter are hereby severed," he added. "I direct that the house be closed and that members will remove their personal belongings from the house by midnight [Monday]."
