John Boyega Challenged To Karaoke Battle, Names His Top 5 MCs
John Boyega is serious about his music. During the taping of his Lego-laden sit-down with Miles Brown, Boyega bragged that he was a karaoke champion in Quingdao, China. So when we met with him face to face we asked him to elaborate on the boast.
“I’m number one in that specific shopping center, yes,” he clarifies. “One night, I didn’t call destiny, destiny called me. And I traveled down with a group of people. We had a night of karaoke, and for some reason, it just turned into a concert in which everybody go their chance to sing. But when it was my moment, I felt like I should have charged them tickets.”
The Pacific Rim Uprising star and producer says he offered up rousing renditions of Michael Jackson’s “Bad” and “Smooth Criminal as well as a bit of Migos. When asked for a sample of his vocal skills he was demure. “I found that, you know, you charge people for the talent, but you probably might see me at the 02, sold out. Madison Square Garden, sold out.”
Boyega’s co-stars Scott Eastwood and Cailee Spaeny have a slightly different recollection of that night.
“That’s very bold of him. That’s very bold that self-proclamation,” says Eastwood. “Got a bone to pick with him about that. Champ, huh? He is better than me, I will say that.”
Eastwood says he did participate in the karaoke, trying his best with some Whitney Houston, but thinks that Cailee, who has recorded professionally, deserves the title.
“We do have video proof that there was actually a karaoke bar inside of our hotel, like the lobby," she confirms. "And I was there probably every night hitting up that karaoke bar. So John can say whatever he wants to say, but I’m down to battle him out again doing karaoke if he’s up for it.”
Regardless of how good he may be at karaoke, Boyega has love for his native U.K. and picked several of his hometown favorites for his Top 5 MCs list. Watch that video below.
