Shelly Sterling Fields Bids of Over $1 Billion for Clippers
Apparently, banned Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling saying that he is going to fight the NBA’s charges against him “to the bloody end” Tuesday, didn’t mean a bloody thing to his estranged wife, Shelly Sterling.
According to an ESPN report, Shelly continued to receive bids and move aggressively in trying to sell the Clippers on Wednesday. Sources close to the situation told ESPN that the bids are well over $1 billion and that Shelly is rushing to find a buyer before the NBA’s Board of Governors meeting in New York City on June 3.
At that time, the league’s owners will have a hearing about Sterling and if 75 percent of them vote against the disgraced owner, he would be forced to sell the Clippers.
This comes after Tuesday’s news, when Donald Sterling’s lawyer, Max Blecher, told ESPN that his client has “disavowed” the agreement struck with his wife last week that would allow her to negotiate the sale of the Clippers.
"I don't know what agreement she has with him, but I'm saying to you, he disavows anything she's doing to sell the team," Blecher said on Tuesday. "He says, 'It's my team, and I'll sell it when and if I get around to it.'"
That marked a sharp 180-degree turn from last Friday’s news of Sterling ordering his wife to negotiate a sale of the franchise and her reportedly meeting with ex-Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer about potentially buying the team.
Sterling was banned for life by NBA commissioner Adam Silver late last month for making racist remarks against African-Americans on a recorded conversation.
