Tragic: Marlins Pitcher Jose Fernandez Suddenly Killed In Terrible Accident
The Marlins organization and Miami baseball fans have been struck with tragedy as rising star and ace right-hand pitcher Jose Fernandez was one of three people killed in a boat crash off Miami Beach early Sunday morning.
Just last week the 24-year-old star had taken to Instagram to announce his girlfriend's pregnancy.
Chief Petty Officer Nyxolyno Cangemi told The Associated Press that at 3:30 a.m. a Coast Guard patrol boat spotted an overturned boat floating in the water. The three bodies were discovered a short time later. Due to the severity of the impact officials believe that speed played a major factor behind the crash, adding that there is no indication that drugs or alcohol played a role.
The baseball community has come together to mourn the loss. MLB Commissioner Robert Manfred said Fernandez was one of the game's brightest young stars. "All of Baseball is shocked and saddened by the sudden passing," Manfred wrote in a statement. "He was one of our game's great young stars who made a dramatic impact on and off the field since his debut in 2013."
David Ortiz one of the sport's most iconic players asked The Tampa Bay Rays to forgo plans to honor him in his final season in the wake of Fernandez' death as well.
The Marlins and many others within the MLB community took to social media to mourn the tragic loss.
