Simone Biles Explains Why She and Jordan Chiles Bowed Down to Rebeca Andrade
Simone Biles has explained why she and her teammate Jordan Chiles bowed down to their competitor Rebeca Andrade as she became the most decorated Brazilian athlete in Olympic history after winning a gold medal in the women's floor exercise at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Monday (Aug. 5).
"[We were] showing good sportsmanship [and] having fun out there because it was the last competition," Biles told PEOPLE.
In a statement on TODAY, the 27-year-old also said, "We don't care whether we win or lose. We're always going to keep a good face and support our competitors because they've worked just as hard as we have for that moment.”
She added, “So you have to give them their flowers. And that's exactly what me and Jordan were doing, and we were so happy for her. She deserved it. She had the best floor routine of the day and in the Olympics. So it's like, yeah, she deserved it."
Biles earned three gold and one silver medal during the Olympics. Her sole silver medal came against Andrade in the floor final, where Biles and Chiles decided to bow to the six-time Olympic medalist. This was largely praised as women supporting women and marked the first time the Olympic podium was filled with Black gymnasts.
