Zendaya and Barry Jenkins Unite With A24 for Ronnie Spector Biopic ‘Be My Baby’
After years of mutual admiration and near-miss collaborations, Barry Jenkins and Zendaya are officially teaming up for a story as iconic as the talent behind it. It was only a matter of time.
The Oscar-winning “Moonlight” director has signed on to helm “Be My Baby,” A24’s long-awaited biographical drama about Ronnie Spector, with Zendaya starring as the trailblazing frontwoman of the Ronettes.
The Emmy winner has been attached to the project since 2020, and Spector herself hand-picked the former child star for the role before her passing in 2022. The music legend also served as an executive producer during the film’s early development.
Based on Spector’s 1990 memoir, Be My Baby: How I Survived Mascara, Miniskirts, and Madness, or, My Life as a Fabulous Ronette, the film will center on her complex and abusive relationship with producer Phil Spector.
Ronnie Spector—born Veronica Bennett—rose to stardom in the '60s, leading the Ronettes, who dropped timeless hits like “Be My Baby,” “Baby, I Love You,” and “Walking in the Rain.” Known for her beehive hair, bold eyeliner, and fearless stage presence, Spector was the face of the girl group era.
However, her memoir pulled back the curtain on a darker reality, revealing she was “essentially kept as a virtual prisoner” by Phil during their marriage. She also opened up about her struggles with alcoholism during that time.
“Be My Baby” reunites Jenkins with A24 following “Moonlight” and this year’s Sundance standout “Sorry, Baby.” It also marks Zendaya’s latest venture with the studio behind Euphoria and her upcoming romantic comedy “The Drama.”
A release date has not yet been set for “Be My Baby.”
