3 Kirk Franklin Performances That Shook the Soul Train Stage
Gospel legend Kirk Franklin owns whatever stage he’s performing on. For several decades, the musician and his beautifully talented choir have rocked stages and sung down award shows across the BET universe with soulful and angelic melodies blended in with Franklin's signature contemporary stylings.
We at the Soul Train Awards have such an affinity for the gospel icon that it’s almost too hard for us not to flock down memory lane as we gear up for this year’s festivities, where a gospel showdown is more than likely expected to take place.
So, while we count down the days til our 2021 Soul Train Awards celebration of R&B and soul, take a look back at three times Franklin and his gospel ensemble understood the assignment and shook the Soul Train Awards stage.
“STOMP!”
Kirk Franklin and The Family delivered a classic performance at the 1998 Soul Train Awards ceremony with Franklin’s iconic record, “Stomp.”

Now while this performance may not have taken place on a Soul Train stage per-say, the 2021 Hip Hop Awards stage to be exact, it did however, display the passion, energy, and excitement that let out when you place a microphone in Franklin’s hand and let the entertainer do his thing.
Traditionally left towards the end, this year Franklin and rapper Lil Baby delivered an opening well worth adding to our list.
“Melodies From Heaven”
Remember when we said Franklin’s spin on contemporary gospel is like none other. This 1996 vintage performance demonstrates how the musician has owned the genre over the years.
