‘Elvis’ Star Shonka Dukureh Found Dead By One Of Her Children

The 44-year-old was in the process of recording her first studio album.

Shonka Dukureh, an actress and singer with a starring role in the recently released Elvis biopic, has died. She was 44.

According to the Metro Nashville Police Department, on Thursday (July 21), the blues singer was found unresponsive by one of her children at their Nashville apartment.

Additionally, authorities say they believe no foul play was involved and a cause of death is pending the results of an autopsy.

A neighbor called 911 at 9:27 Thursday after they were alerted by one of Dukureh’s children. Her two kids shared an apartment with the singer/actress.

Dukureh portrayed Big Mama Thorton in Elvis, which was the North Carolina native’s first big movie role. She was also in the process of recording her first studio album titled The Lady Sings the Blues.
