George Zimmerman Wants Florida to Pay His Legal Expenses

George Zimmerman, who was acquitted of second-degree murder charges in the killing of unarmed teen Trayvon Martin, is asking the state of Florida to pay his legal fees.

George Zimmerman, who was acquitted of second-degree murder charges in the killing of unarmed teen Trayvon Martin, is asking the state of Florida to pay some of his defense fees.

Because he was found not guilty in the case, the state must cover Zimmerman's legal costs, except the fees he was charged by his lawyers. Zimmerman's lead attorney Mark O' Mara said Monday that he is preparing to file the motion in the next few weeks. Zimmerman may be reimbursed for as much as $300,000. 

He is seeking the funds to cover expenses for expert witnesses, court reporters, travel and other costs.  
Orlando Sentinel reports

It would be based on Florida Statute 939.06, which states that a defendant who has been acquitted is not liable for any costs associated with his case and, if he or she paid anything, they would be due a refund, if approved by a judge or clerk.

The money would come from the Judicial Administrative Commission, the state agency that pays the non-lawyer legal expenses of indigent defendants.

O'Mara said he would ask the judge to certify the costs he submits. He then expects the commission, which is commonly referred to as JAC, to challenge many.
