Chaka Khan Awarded Guardianship of Granddaughter
Singing icon Chaka Khan has won temporary custody of her 10-year-old granddaughter.
TMZ obtained legal documents naming the R&B legend guardian of the child because of the parents' addiction to drugs. Last week, Khan filed a petition for appointment of guardianship, stating she’d already "assumed — on a day-to-day basis — the role of the child's parent fulfilling both the child's physical and psychological needs for care and affection."
The Grammy-winning vocalist claimed that the child’s mother is unable to care for the young girl because of a “heavy involvement in drugs.” Tammy McCrary, Khan’s sister, was also awarded custody. In an additional statement, she claimed that Khan’s son also abuses drugs and “other illegal substances.”
In the past, Khan has also battled her own addiction to drugs and alcohol.
After the judge temporarily granted the petition for custody on September 6, he extended it on Thursday. The hearing to make custody permanent is set for October.
