FAMU Halts Dismissal of Band Director and Students

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement asked the university to stop any disciplinary action until a criminal investigation into the death of Robert Champion takes place.

Dismissal procedures have been put on hold against Florida A & M University’s marching band director and the four students who were kicked out for the death of a drum major.

On Wednesday, it was announced that the Florida Department of Law Enforcement asked the university to stop any disciplinary action until a criminal investigation into the death of Robert Champion takes place.

Band director Julian White’s status has changed to administrative leave with pay and the four students accused of being involved in the death of 26-year-old drum major Robert Champion are back on campus taking classes.

Last month in Orlando, 26-year-old Robert Champion, a drum major for the historically Black college’s famed marching band, the Marching 100, died only hours after performing at the annual Florida Classic football game.

On Thursday, the same day new audio evidence emerged showing that the drum major had vomit in his mouth moments before he died, the university announced that it would dismiss four students for their role in Champion’s death.

They also announced that FAMU's band director, Julian White, would also be fired in response to Champion’s death.

An attorney for Champion’s family has sent a letter to the school’s board of trustees indicating that they plan to sue over their loved one's death.
