Box Office: The Force Was With Star Wars

The Force Awakens demolishes records with $238 million weekend.

We all knew Star Wars: The Force Awakens would dominate this weekend, but with $238 million in ticket sales, it turned out to be the biggest domestic opening of all time. And that's only half the film's astronomical $517 million global take. The film, which stars John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Lupita Nyong'o and others, broke a string of other records this weekend — too many to list — and proves that the franchise is as beloved as ever.

Coming in a very, very distant second place, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip opened to $14.4 million and was followed by Sisters, which stars Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, with $13.4 million.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 and Michael B. Jordan's Creed rounded out the top five, earning $5.7 million and $5.1 million respectively.
The Christmas weekend presents a bounty of new releases at the box office, from Will Smith's Concussion to Quentin Tarantino's Hateful Eight and Jennifer Lawrence's Joy. But we doubt any of them will take the force away from Star Wars.
