How to Prepare for Tropical Storm Debby

Expect a stormy weekend.

Tropical Storm Debby has already unleashed over a foot of rain on various Southern regions, including Florida and Georgia,

Early Thursday morning (August 8), the storm roared back onto the U.S. mainland, making its second landfall in South Carolina. As it barrels towards North Carolina, residents on the northeast coast can expect relentless downpours and gusty winds to persist throughout the weekend.

Fear not—with a bit of planning and preparedness, you can weather the storm with ease and keep your home and loved ones safe. From staying on top of updates to gathering emergency supplies, keep reading to learn a few tips to ensure you’re ready for what Debby still has in store.

  • Pack an emergency bag

If you stay ready, you won’t have to get ready—if you already have an emergency bag on standby. When it comes to storm preparedness, an emergency bag is your best friend. Pack a first-aid kit, phone chargers, and charged-up power banks. Be sure to include clothing, non-perishable foods, bottled water, medications, a flashlight, batteries, a whistle, and any necessary personal documents in a waterproof container. Books, games, and other activities will also come in handy to help weather the storm.

Don’t forget about your pets! Include their food, water, and any medications they may need.

  • Monitor weather updates

Stay informed by tuning into local news channels, weather apps, and official social media accounts for real-time updates on Tropical Storm Debby. Pay attention to advisories and warnings issued by authorities. This information will be crucial in helping you make timely decisions about evacuation or other safety measures.

  • Create a family communication plan

Staying in touch can be challenging in the chaos of a storm. Establish a communication plan with family members so everyone knows where to go and how to contact each other if separated. Also, designate a safe meeting spot in case you need to evacuate.

  • Expect power outages

Tropical Storm Debby may bring power outages, so it's wise to be ready. Charge your devices fully in advance and consider investing in a portable power bank. With caution, having extra candles, matches, and a manual can opener on hand will also be helpful.

Have alternative forms of payment. Power outages can disrupt electronic payment systems, so it’s a good idea to have some cash on hand. Stock up on small denominations to use for purchases if credit card machines aren’t working.
