We’ve all heard about Tasha Smith’s marriage woes.

Last December, the For Better or Worse actress had her three-year marriage annulled after finding out her ex-husband Keith Douglas was a “fraud.” Smith accused Douglas of living a double life, having multiple children he never told Smith about, embezzlement and abuse.

A mess.

Now, Smith, who calls the annulment a “miracle,” is shelling out some sound relationship advice, warning women to get a background check on potential mates.

She recently told Hollywood Today Live, “You can’t believe everything that everyone says, and I actually didn’t think that I was that famous to the point where somebody would look at me as a mark to be able to try to set me up and con me.”

Smith added, “I was just oblivious to the reality to how desperate people are and now it’s all about a background check, honey,” she said. “I don’t care if you just want to kiss the brother, you call up and I got a good private investigator.”

She also stressed that this is especially important for working women as a means to shield themselves from a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

“We’ve got to protect ourselves. And when men come to us that we don’t know and we don’t know their families, I think it’s important for us to do a serious background check so we can know who we’re dealing with,” she said.

And while it’s easy for folks to dismiss Smith off as bitter and disillusioned, she claims that it not the case. She is out there getting her groove back and no longer believes the myth that there are not enough quality Black men out there.

“I used to think there was a shortage of men, but there really isn’t,” she said. “I feel like a child. There is no shortage,” she stressed.

Real talk: No one can fault Smith for feeling the way that she does. She took a vow in front of God to honor and cherish a man who lied to her and hurt her. That type of betrayal can forever change you and her goal is to make sure that it doesn’t happen to anyone else.

And what she is saying doesn’t seem too off.

C’mon, who hasn’t Googled a future bae to confirm who they say they are and see if they are really single or if they haven’t been convicted of a crime? In this day and age, trust is truly hard to come by. So if you need a little extra protection and have the extra coins to pay for a background check, why not?

The truth is priceless.
