ComicView's Brandi Denise Rises to the Challenge
Crowdwork can be challenging in the stand-up world. Talent needs to be sharp and quick, and they should pray the audience already likes them; otherwise, everything falls flat. Interacting with the crowd adds an element of casual conversation and unpredictability to the set. But sometimes, you're just responding to a heckler.
Brandi Denise, currently seen on the latest season of ComicView, recently shared a video of her Laugh Factory set where an attention-seeking audience member tried to be a part of the routine. Denise addressed the stunt for exactly what it was, using the audience member as fodder for crowd work even as she expressed impatience with crowd work. Take a look:
"Y'all wanna be talked to. I don't know what happened on TikTok that got y'all like 'Oh I need to be a part of the show' but . . . Do you live in a box? Is that why you cheered for my apartment? What's going on? I'm like, 'Hey how y'all doing' [and you're like] 'Heeeey, heeeey, talk to me!' There's no cameras facing you, you're not going viral tonight, baby. The Laugh Factory ain't got that much money . . . The internet has changed comedy. I wrote real jokes but you're like, 'listen to me say hey.' When I get drunk I just wanna be a ho, y'all wanna be obnoxious - that's crazy. When I get drunk I look for men with money, you wanna be embarrassing. Y'all are wild. I'm funny, even off the cuff. You tested me, so can you shut the f—- up now?"
