Kirk Franklin Addresses Jamaica Performance, ‘Twerking’ On Clark Sisters Member

The gospel artist explained he never wants to “offend anyone in any community.”

Kirk Franklin reflected on his 2024 and cringed at some concert moments.

On December 30, the gospel musician posted a YouTube video titled “Thank you for a beautiful 24,” where he looked back on his year that was “unlike any other” that he experienced in the past. Experienced during Franklin’s year were two controversial moments, namely his bicep-baring performance in Jamaica, where he wore a tight-fitting tank top, and a playful onstage gyration on Clark Sisters member Jacky Clark Chisholm during a stop on the Reunion Tour.

Both moments concerned Franklin’s staunchly nonsecular fans, to whom he apologized and provided an explanation around the 6:30-minute mark of the video below.

"I am aware now that my choice of attire, which as a team we thought was going to be fine being outside in the weather, was going to be something that would not come across as disrespectful," the 20-time Grammy winner said about his outfit worn in Jamaica. "I’ve spent most of my career dancing and moving around and jumping on stage that I didn’t know that I would ever do anything that would ever offend anyone in any community, but it did. And because it did, I sincerely apologize.”

Franklin added that he never wants his decisions to make him “reach” a point where he “can’t learn.”

“It doesn’t matter what my goal and intent is; if I’m louder than the message of Jesus, then I failed,” he admitted.

Regarding joking around with Clark Chisholm, Franklin said his “twerking” was “too much,” although those he was onstage with were his friends, who are used to his lighthearted behavior.

"I shouldn’t have been playing out there in front of y’all," Franklin shared. "I should have kept that to myself and had fun with them the way I do when we be acting a fool. But sometimes I get on my own nerves. And when I was doing it, it seemed fine. When I saw the clip, yeah, it’s too much."

Also in the vlog, Franklin revisited his 2024 BET Awards performance with Will Smith and was featured on GloRilla’s debut album, “Glorious.”
