Rachel Roy has joined forces with the FEED Foundation and fellow designer Lauren Bush Lauren to create two FEED India tote bags that will benefit the country. The limited edition FEED 100 India bags come with bold heart patterns, colorful tassels and is handmade by Indian artisans. The best part is the fact that each bag will provide 100 school meals to children in India.
"I'm half Indian and so that part of the world is particularly important to me," Roy told StyleBlazer at the launch in New York City's Bloomingdale's. "And so Lauren showed me tons of different prints that I could choose from. And I traveled to India a few months ago to meet the men and women who actually made the bag and to really see how it affects people. And then to find out that 200,000 people are benefited for something that is so easy ... just lets me know, what if I tried a little bit harder? What if everyone did just a little something, in whatever it is they're good at, whether it's writing or, for us, designing. Just fun and easy."
Not only does the bag fund the company's fight against hunger, it also provides employment opportunities for Indian residents.
"A handout lasts one time, but when you can actually help people find work, you know, we kind of take it for granted living here. As long as you pursue what you love, you pretty much find out if there's an internship available, that's how I started. Very low paying jobs, but in third world countries that's not even possible. So the more employment we can provide, which includes insurance, just things that sometimes I forget, the better. I think both of our goals are providing jobs."
