2-Year-Old AJ Burgess Being Denied Kidney Transplant From Father Inspired People On Twitter To Create A Petition

Nearly 60,000 signatures have been collected on Change.org.

The story of 2-year-old AJ Burgess, who was denied a kidney transplant from his father due to a parole violation, quickly broke the hearts of people around the country.

Although AJ's father, Anthony Dickerson, is a perfect match for a kidney donation, Emory University Hospital in Atlanta delayed the transplant until January 2018 because Dickerson violated his parole.

Dickerson, who was recently released from jail, was told he would need to be on good behavior for three or four months before they would be able to move forward with the kidney transplant.

The hospital's policy received much backlash due to AJ's rapidly deteriorating condition.

  • Soon after AJ's story became nationally known, a campaign on the government petition site change.org was created

"I've created this petition to get the attention of The Living Donor Transplant Team at Emory Hospital and CEO of Emory Healthcare, Jonathan C. Lewin, with the hopes that the team will have a change of heart and perform the kidney transplant at the family's earliest convenience," petition creator Spencer Karter wrote on the site.

As of today, the petition has received nearly 59,000 signatures out of the 75,000 it is requesting.

  • People on twitter slammed Emory hospital and created several hashtags to bring awareness to AJ's story

  • AJ's family is desperately seeking help in order to save the toddler's life
