Box Office: White House Down Crashes, Monsters U Soars
In the battle of the buddy cop movies, the ladies won the weekend. Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock's The Heat surprised analysts by pulling in $39.1 million and silencing skeptics who didn't believe a female-led action film would perform. It ended up being Bullock's most profitable opening weekend to date.
Not such good news for White House Down, in which Jamie Foxx plays the president under siege and chained to Channing Tatum for protection. The film, which cost north of $150 million to produce, grossed a paltry $24.8 million.
But first place was reserved for last week's winner Monsters University, which held on to its crown for the second week in a row. The animated film grossed $45.6 million over the weekend for a ten-day total of $170 million.
World War Z and Man of Steel rounded out the top five, with both films losing about 50 percent of their audience from the previous week. Sounds like a steep fall, but its actually not bad considering how many options were in theaters this week, including two new entries.
Next week, Despicable Me 2 and Johnny Depp's The Lone Ranger gallop into town, but will either be able to slay the Monsters?
