Ketanji Brown Jackson Makes Broadway Debut in ‘& Juliet’
Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson briefly stepped away from the bench to make her Broadway debut over the weekend.
A dream decades in the making, the 54-year-old stepped into the spotlight Saturday night (Dec 14) for a one-night-only performance in the hit jukebox musical “& Juliet,” a modern reimagining of the classic “Romeo and Juliet.”
Speaking to CBS Mornings’ Gayle King, Justice Jackson reflected on the experience, saying, “I think that it means that anything is possible. Five years ago, I was a district court justice; nobody knew who I was. To have both of the pieces of my fondest dreams come true in this little bit of time has been extraordinary for me.”
When King asked what was going through her mind before stepping on stage, Jackson replied, “I was just like, ‘Wow, this is really gonna happen.’ And I was going through my lines.”
The “& Juliet” team shared behind-the-scenes footage of Jackson’s preparations, capturing her joy and excitement as she embraced this rare opportunity. The performance offered audiences a glimpse of the history-making jurist in a new light, far removed from the solemn halls of the Supreme Court.
President Joe Biden appointed Jackson to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit in 2021 and later nominated her to the U.S. Supreme Court. She took her seat on June 30, 2022, becoming the first Black woman to serve as a Justice.
