Hip-hop has lost yet another legend. Fresh Kid Ice, co-founder of the iconic rap group 2 Live Crew, passed away on July 13 at the age of 53. Shortly after the tragic news was confirmed, former 2 Live Crew member Uncle Luke jumped on social media to share his deepest condolences.

“My Condolences goes out to the family [of] Chris Wong Won Fresh Kid Ice of the 2 Live Crew, who passed away this morning. We lost a legend,” Uncle Luke wrote. On Instagram, the rap artist also shared an image of Fresh Kid smiling with the same mournful caption. Brother Marquis, another former member of the group, also commented on Fresh Kid’s untimely passing. “I’ll always remember and cherish all of the good times we had together and all of the history we made,” he told Vibe.

Fresh Kid Ice, who was also known as The Chinaman, was the culture’s first Asian and Trinidadian rapper. After migrating to Brooklyn from Trinidad and Tobago, he formed 2 Live Crew in the early ‘80s. The group was best known for their 1989 classic album As Nasty As They Wanna Be, which gained critical reception for its obscene language and content. Fresh Kid went on to have a solo career in the late 2000s working with other well known artists, including Flo Rida.

The Chinaman may be gone, but his legacy will continue to live on wax and in the hearts of all of his fans, friends and family. And sources say Lionsgate will also reportedly keep his memory alive in a forthcoming 2 Live Crew biopic.
